Good news and bad news for American Idol alum and Voice mentor Kelly Clarkson. Her latest album, Stronger, experienced a slight jump in sales on Amazon after the singer endorsed Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Twitter. Since then, however, Clarkson has found herself having to defend her politics, with some fans accusing her of supporting racism, the death penalty, and opposing same-sex marriage.
With a slight jump in sales and a climb from No. 39 to No. 17 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, youd think that Kelly Clarkson would be spending her days celebrating the recent success of Stronger. Instead, it seems that the FOX reality star is caught in the middle of a pol! itical f irestorm.
What happened? It all started on Twitter.
I love Ron Paul, Kelly recently tweeted. I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 hes got my vote. Too bad he probably wont.
Though her comments got her some support on Amazon and a number of new Twitter followers, Clarkson also received a bit of backlash from fans er, former fans who accused her of supporting racism and blasted her for endorsing a candidate thats for the death penalty and opposes same-sex marriage. (Newsletters published in Ron Pauls name in the 80s and 90s included a few racist sentiments. The Republican candidate recently acknowledged that the terrible words were written by someone else.)
Kelly, wholl be featured as a mentor this season on NBCs The Voice, took to her WhoSay page to address all of the buzz:
Man, my eyes have been opened to so much hate tonight. If yall ever disagree with something I say, please dont feel the need to attack me. I will listen to what you say and any articles of viewpoints you have when you say it with respect. Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you.
If you dont agree with me simply unfollow me, she added. Its really that easy.
