The Fifth Down: O Say: How Fast Can Kelly Clarkson Sing the Anthem?

Mike Coppola/Getty Images Kelly Clarkson performing at Radio City Music Hall in New York this month. INDIANAPOLIS While betting on the actual result of the Super Bowl is, obviously, a popular activity for many fans, the unusual prop, or proposition wagers , can often be more intriguing. One of the most popular prop bets in recent years has been the over/under wager on the length of the national anthem, and this year with Kelly Clarkson set to perform the anthem most sports books offering action on the wager have set the over/under time at 1 minute 34 seconds. Sound short? Apparently, it isnt. For those who are so inclined, the analysts at the web site Beyond the Bets researched Clarksons previous performances of the anthem and have concluded that there may be significant value in betting the under. According to the web site, the longest public anthem Clarkson has ever performed was 1 minute 38 seconds, and that took place at a charity event in 2000. In individual anthems, the site ...

Workaholic Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson "doesn't understand" how singers party all the time when they go on tour. The 29-year-old beauty is a "workaholic" and can't comprehend how people have the time or energy to go out when they are playing gigs around the world. She said: "I don't understand how people do that on the road. "I'm definitely a workaholic. If you finally get to do the job you love, you work your butt off." The 'Stronger' hitmaker - who has previously revealed she hit "rock bottom" in 2006 due to the pressures of fame - still keeps her same circle of friends since becoming a star when she won 'American Idol' in 2002, but her parents Jeanne and Stephen have always thought she was going to be a successful singer. She added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "They've always been big believers that I was going to be able to sing for a living. "They always thought it was going to happen for me and have been super s...

You can bet on whether Kelly Clarkson forgets a word to the national anthem

Image
(Getty Images) Continuing on a grand tradition of ridiculous Super Bowl prop bets, leading online sports gaming website, Bovada (formerly Bodog), is offering multiple wagers on Kelly Clarkson's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner." The usual "how long will the anthem be" odds take a backseat this year to a new wager inspired by Christina Aguilera's Super Bowl XLV debacle. Will Kelly Clarkson forget or omit one word from the national anthem? Yes (+250) First, let me explain what "+250" means if you're not familiar with the logistics of wagering. If you put $100 down on Clarkson forgetting a word, there's a 250 percent chance that you have a major gambling problem. (It actually means you win $250 for every $100 wagered.) The odds are set up to indicate that Clarkson won't forget a word. Thisfact suggests oddsmakers of the world, like the rest of us, have little respect for Aguilera and Cyndi Lauper . I think that's the safe bet. Y...

New Song: Kelly Clarkson, 'Mr. Know It All (Country Version)'

Image
Posted 1 hr ago by Byron Flitsch in Celebrity , Music We love when our favorite singers hit us with something completely unexpected (um, Jo Calderone , anyone?), so we're definitely feeling the latest surprise pop trend: goin' country, y'all. First Miley Cyrus released an AH-MAZING folk/country version of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go." And now sweet-as-pie Kelly Clarkson 's " Mr. Know It All " is gettin' some southern lovin'. While Kelly's original version of "Mr. Know It All" embraced an empowering "I'm outta here, and I'm taking the expensive car with me" vibe, the newly released country version offers a softer, heartfelt approach to leaving a relationship. Twangy guitar riffs and a gentle fiddle bring the tune into quieter territory, while Kelly's vocals remain strong-willed. But being the super-talent that she is, Kel makes it seem like country music has always been...

Kelly Clarkson shows off down-home appeal

K elly Clarksons stage set is skimpy by Katy Perry standards. The original American Idols J.C. Penney style is painfully un-hip compared with Lady Gaga s grandeur. Her bootie, well, lets just say Beyonce would dress that thing up. But what other stars consider faults are Clarksons assets just ask anyone at the singers sold-out Wang Theatre show last night. You cant fake what Clarkson has: honest, earnest, down-home appeal. Trust me, many have tried and failed (see the aforementioned Perry). Between great hits (Since U Been Gone, Breakaway) and a good deal of filler, Clarkson chatted like one of her tween fans after shotgunning a Red Bull . It kept the show from finding a rhythm and diminished the punch of the intense numbers her take on Florence + the Machine s Heavy in Your Arms showed off her range. But her Texas-drawl motormouth is so natural, so endearing, its hard to fault her for it. The nights best moment came after she admitted her love for Heart : I will take it to the p...

Weekly Chart Notes: Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Gavin DeGraw

'21' SALUTE: As Adele 's "21" tops the Billboard 200 for a 17th week , the set moves closer to the mark for most weeks at No. 1 for an album by a woman. In the 56-year history of the survey, only the Whitney Houston -led soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" has reigned longer among solo females (20 weeks, 1992-93). Thus, the magic number of weeks at the summit that "21" will need to become the longest-leading album by a female artist? 21. (The album continues its reign on the Billboard 200 by holding off the set that debuts directly below it at No. 2: "Kidz Bop Kids 21"). Billboard.com reader prumjabi88 commented that 21 is already a lucky number for Adele. "Set Fire to the Rain" becomes the third Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 from "21" in its 21st week on the chart (rising 2-1). Adele sure has come a long way since her first Hot 100 entry, "Chasing Pavements." The week of Feb. 28, 2009, the song peaked at No. 21. O...

Term 'states' rights' heard anew in election cycle

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) As the Republican presidential campaign has turned south, into the region that seceded from the Union 150 years ago, old debates about the term "states' rights" and federal authority echo anew in phrases used by candidates, their supporters and the news media. Even before the Civil War, "states' rights" was a byword for the protection of black slavery. In the modern civil rights era, the phrase was at times a "dog whistle" for racist elements in the electorate. Today, presidential candidates like congressman Ron Paul cite states' rights as an issue. In doing so they are talking about the 10th Amendment and its delegation of powers to states and to the people instead of the federal government. But the term can still bring back memories of Southern states resisting segregation.

Graceful Kelly Clarkson's everywoman appeal just grows stronger

K elly Clarkson stands out by being average. Clarkson is such a Plain Jane, it would be hard to pick her out of a crowd. But put the original American Idol next to Beyonce, Britney and Lady Gaga, and suddenly one of these things is not like the other. This is the trick to Clarksons repeated rebounds. Since winning the first Idol crown in 2002, Clarkson who plays the Wang Theatre tomorrow has bounced between A-lister and underdog. Her 2004 hit Since U Been Gone was one of the top pop tunes of the last decade. Three years later, she pushed darker, less mainstream material on My December and the album flopped. In 2009, she roared back with chart-topping single My Life Would Suck Without You. Then she released three follow-up singles that missed the Top 10. All these ups and down her latest up being her Saturday Night Live performance last month but her career has never flat-lined. Why? Because theres no one like her. Well, theres no one in pop like her. Take away her impressive voice ...

Image
By The Dispatch Staff Marguarette Michel VERONA A Syracuse woman is charged with grand larceny after stealing a purse at a Kelly Clarkson concert at Turning Stone Casino Thursday. Oneida County Sheriffs deputies arrested 39-year-old Marguarette Michel, of Syracuse, for grand larceny after Oneida Indian Nation Police discovered she had stolen a purse at the Events Center. Investigators say Michel was at the Kelly Clarkson concert Thursday when she noticed a purse under a chair in the row in front of her. She allegedly took the purse and left the Event Center. Police say she then went to another area of the casino where she took money and credit cards out of the purse and threw the rest away. Michel did not gamble with any of the money stolen from the purse, although she planned on doing so, investigators say. After returning to her seat at the concert, the victim mentioned her purse was missing so Michel left the concert and, according to her, went home to Syracuse, police say. She was...

Kelly Clarkson Tourmate Calls Opening Act Gig A 'Prize Fight'

As Kelly Clarkson kicks off 2012 with her highly anticipated Stronger tour , MTV News caught up with her opening act, singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson . Clarkson fans may recognize Nathanson from his single "Come On Get Higher," which received heavy radio play in 2008 and then again with 2011's "Faster." For someone who hasn't heard his music yet, it can best be described as acoustic rock with a squeeze of country and a pop garnish. He cited a wide range of musical influences including U2, Poison, White Snake, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Van Halen. Nathanson will also be playing several headlining shows while he tours with Clarkson. He opened up about different being an opening act is compared to having your own show. "Opening shows are more like you've got to go out and win them over," he said. "It's like clubbing people over the head and dragging them back to your cave. It's like a prize fight. You go out and just grab them and d...

Kelly Clarkson Covers Etta James' 'I'd Rather Go Blind,' Completely Nails It

Image
Posted 2 hrs ago by Jenna Hally Rubenstein in Celebrity , Music Credit: Getty Images What better way is there to pay tribute to the late, VERY GREAT Etta James than by singing one of her most famous songs at one of the world's most famous venues? At her Radio City Music Hall show this past Saturday, Kelly Clarkson honored the singer, who passed away Friday after a lengthy battle with leukemia , by covering "I'd Rather Go Blind," one of Etta's most powerful and poignant songs. Though Kelly Clarkson is primarily known for her pop-centric pipes, she brought out her raspy (and may I add, effing incredible) blues side in an homage to Etta's signature jazzy style. As the bass line began with that familiar intro lick, the audience went wild as Kelly tackled those famous first lines: " Something told me it was over/ When I saw you and her talking/Something deep down in my soul said cry, girl/When I saw you and that girl walking/Iwould rather, I would rather ...

My favourite song is Id Rather Go Blind. So, this is for Etta." She then belted out a flawless rendition of the 1968 song. Stars paid tribute to James in the wake of her death on Friday (January 20), with Beyonc posting a simple "RIP Etta James" and Jessie J saying: "Thank you for your voice, your dedication." Kelly Clarkson will lend her ample vocal chords to the Superbowl next month, when she will sing the US National Anthem . Watch Kelly performing 'I'd Rather Go Blind' below: Kelly and...
