Oct. 5, 2002: Kelly Clarkson Scores First 'American Idol' No. 1

Ten years ago today, an "American Idol" contestant crowned the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, as original series champion Kelly Clarkson blasted from No. 52 to No. 1 with coronation ballad "A Moment Like This."

Since, six more singles by graduates from the Fox singing competition have led the list, including two more by Clarkson. Her latter two leaders are the only songs by former "Idol" singers to top the Hot 100 that were not released as souvenir tracks following their seasonal victories.

Clarkson is the second-best-selling "Idol" album artist. With 11.8 million albums sold in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, she trails only Carrie Underwood (13.5 million). As reported yesterday, Clarkson will release "Greatest Hits - Chapter 1" Nov. 19. New single "Catch My Breath" will hit digital retailers Oct. 16. "This song represents who I've been, what I've felt, and where I'm headed as not only an artist but as a 30-year-old that is now smart enough to know that it's time to stop, catch my breath, and be proud of not only what has been accomplished but of all the people that have helped me become the woman I am today," Clarkson says.
