John Legend Joins ABC's 'Duets,' Replaces Lionel Richie

Ethan Miller/Getty Images John Legend John Legend has been added to ABC's musical competition series Duets as a replacement for Lionel Richie, who has dropped out of the program. It was announced in early March that Richie would take part in the series, but because of scheduling issues, he will not be participating. As of late, Richie -- whose country duets album Tuskegee has been No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for the past two weeks -- has made appearances on NBC's The Voice as a mentor and had a two-hour CBS concert special, ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends -- In Concert , that aired April 13. PHOTOS: 10 Musicians Who Crossed Over to Movies Legend will join Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke as they search the country for undiscovered musical talent to be featured on the summer show. Idol airplay: Kelly Clarkson and more

Image
Kelly Clarkson's Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) finally loosens its grip on the top of USA TODAY's Hot AC chart. It's still at No. 2 there and at the AC format, though, as well as No. 8 at Top 40. That's enough to keep it easily at No. 1 on this week's American Idol airplay chart. Carrie Underwood's Good Girl continues to move quickly up the Country chart. It's at No. 6 there and at No. 35 the Hot AC chart. Kelly Clarkson's the only other Idol in the Country top 40 this week, with her country mix of Mr. Know It All . The bottom quarter of the Hot AC top 40 is chock full of Idols this week. In addition to Good Girl , Daughtry's Outta My Head is No. 33, and Adam Lambert's Never Close Our Eyes is No. 38. Haley Reinhart's Free breaks into the Hot AC top 40 this week (and Kris Allen's The Vision of Love is right behind it at No. 41). Also on the charts: Jennifer Hudson, Mandisa and Ruben Studdard. Speaking of the video last month, she said : "I always like to come up with, sometimes just a concept of visually what I'd like to see and then let the directors run with it because they're so creative and they usually have great ideas. "I think it's always better when more people are involved and you have all these ideas flowing. I'm excited. It's going to be different to what you probably think." Happy 30th Birthday, Kelly Clarkson!

Image
Kelly Clarkson turns 30 today! The original American Idol has been churning out the big pop-rock anthems for a decade, and is still very much on top of her game after scoring a US No. 1 with her recent hit 'What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)'. "Today I am 30 years old YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!," she posted on Twitter. "I am happy, healthy, and looking forward to my thirties! Have an awesome day everybody!" Kelly's first LP Thankful , which included the hits 'Miss Independent', 'The Trouble With Love Is' and the yet-to-be-Leona'd 'A Moment Like This', was released in 2003; however it wasn't until 2005's Breakway and the hits 'Since U Been Gone' and 'Because Of You' that she was catapulted to global superstardom. Her subsequent three albums My December , All I Ever Wanted and Stronger have all hit the Top 2 in the US and the Top 5 in the UK. Next month she will turn talent show mentor in new ABC series Duets...

OFFSTAGE: Kelly Clarkson Begged American Idol for Country Week

Image
Kelly Clarkson ( CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.) Back when Kelly Clarkson was on American Idol in 2002, there was no such thing as country week on the show. There was Motown week and big band week, but no country. (Even though I do remember someone singing John Michael Montgomery 's "I Swear," which I was just biased enough to love.) Clarkson was the winner of that first season, but she lost the fight for a country week. "I was born and raised in Texas, and I've always been a huge country music fan. In fact, when I was on the first season of American Idol , I begged them to do a country week, but they didn't do that until the second season," she said in a press release about her new country take on her pop hit "Mr. Know It All." She added that what really inspires her as an artist are the sassy female vocalists of country music like Reb...

Kelly Clarkson - Kelly Clarkson Celebrating 30th Birthday Today

Kelly Clarkson turns 30 today and she's ushering in a new decade in style, with a major role forthcoming in the new TV talent show Duets. Clarkson will star in the series, alongside Lionel Richie, Robin Thicke and Jennifer Nettles. The former American Idol winner and her fellow singing co-stars will be on the hunt for fresh singing talent in the US and the twist in the new format for Duets is that the mentors will actually perform alongside their proteges every week, in front of a live studio audience. The winner of the series will win a contract with Hollywood Records. For some of the contestants, the chance to sing and perform live with Kelly Clarkson will be a life-changing experience. This is, after all, the vocalist that impressed the whole of America, if not the world, with her faultless rendition of 'Star Spangled Banner' at last year's Super Bowl; it's one of the biggest gigs in America's sporting calendar and Clarkson pulled it off with aplomb, succeedi...

They had their speakers, you know a lot of people have monitors, their speakers were built into the stage. It was a new concept for me. We were stepping on the speakers it was incredible." Kelly Clarkson hits the Country top 40

Image
Kelly Clarkson has been all over the pop charts lately. Now she's making a move to country. While Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) remains at No. 1 on USA TODAY's Hot AC airplay chart and at No. 5 on the Top 40 chart, the new country mix of Mr. Know It All breaks into the top 40 of the Country chart. While Kelly has had previous country hits as a duet partner for Reba McEntire and Jason Aldean, it's the first time she has made the country chart on her own. So maybe it's only fitting that Carrie Underwood's Good Girl -- currently No. 8 on the Country chart -- is now climbing the Hot AC chart, as well (at No. 37 this week). Other Idols in the top 40 of one of USA TODAY's airplay charts: Lauren Alaina, Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Casey James, Adam Lambert, Mandisa, Ruben Studdard and Elliott Yamin. Adam's Never Close Our Eyes makes its debut on the American Idol airplay chart this week at No. 87. Three stations have picked up Adam's single early: A...

Kelly Clarkson delivers a short but satisfying Vegas show

Image
Josh Bell Wed, Apr 11, 2012 (5:56 p.m.) Kelly, were hopelessly devoted to you, too. Photo: Denise Truscello/Wireimage Kelly Clarkson April 5, The Pearl Unlike a lot of other pop stars, Kelly Clarkson doesnt fill her concerts with dance troupes, elaborate costumes or intricate set design. Her April 5 show at the Pearl kept the focus squarely on her stellar voice and catchy, well-crafted songs. The closest thing to a dance number was Clarkson jumping up and down onstage, and the closest thing to a costume change involved the singer changing her shirt a couple of times (she also delivered her entire performance in bare feet). The Texan Clarkson has always been casual and humble in her approach to performing, and she gushed over nearly every song during her too-short 80-minute set, introducing seemingly half of them as her favorite something. This is my favorite song Ive ever written, she said before performing the sarcastic kiss-off You Love Me, probably the best song from her new album St...

Kelly Clarkson shows just how 'Strong' she really is in Nokia concert

Image
Kelly Clarkson performs Tuesday night at the Nokia Theater LA Live as part of her Stronger Tour 2012. (Sean Hiller/Staff Photographer) | PHOTO GALLERY Kelly Clarkson fought back at any naysayers and proved she's better than ever, Tuesday night, when her "Stronger" tour came to Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. The first song of the night, "Dark Side," was accompanied by a video of headlines bashing the "American Idol" winner, including "Kelly Clarkson is fat" and others that touched on her lack of a dating life, make-up malfunctions, loss of sponsors and album leaks. But that was just the beginning of her self-empowering show. The stage was simple and there were no major costume changes, dancers or any theatrics. The large TV screens along the side of the stage were turned off, and while that gave the setting a more intimate feel and forced the cheering fans in the packed theater to all look at the stage, the crowd toward the b...
