Grammy 2013 Nominations: Honorees Announced Include Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson And fun.

Grammy Nominations 2013
The Grammy 2013 nominations included a nod for Mumford & Sons.

The Grammy 2013 nominations have been announced and Frank Ocean, Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 are among those who made the list.

Names that were missing early in the broadcast included One Direction, Carly Rae Jepsen and Gotye in the Best New Artist category. Frank Ocean picked up multiple nods, a less surprising occurrence given the strength of his debut studio album, "channel ORANGE."

Kelly Clarkson and fun. were among the early standouts. Clarkson jumped out in front, earning nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album and Record of the Year in the early portion of the nominations broadcast.

Taking place on Feb. 10, 2013, the 55th Grammy Award show will air exclusively on CBS. The awards will be held at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

The nominations were announced at Wednesday night's Grammy Nominations Concert Live!, co-hosted by Taylor Swift and LL Cool J. The first nominations concert took place in 2008 and has been hosted by LL every year since its inception.

The first Grammy! awards ceremony was held in 1959, when The Milwaukee Journal explained the honor as "the record industry's answer to Oscar and Emmy." Photos of nominees and our live blog of the nominations concert is available below.

Frank Ocean lined up six awards. That's a very impressive tally for a rookie, but he wasn't the only one:

Frank Ocean, the R&B standout of the year, is nominated for six awards at the 2013 Grammys. The Odd Future member and "Thinking About You" singer lined up nods for Best New Artist, Record of the Year ("Thinkin Bout You"), Album of the Year ("channel Orange") categories, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Rap Sung Collaboration (with Kanye West and Jay-Z on "No Church in the Wild") and Best Short Form Music Video (for "No Church in the Wild").

That ties Ocean with Kanye West, Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, fun., Jay-Z and Mumford & Sons, who each remarkable scored six nominations.

Ocean was heavily favored as a nominee for Best New Artist, much-deserved hype built on the strength of not only his debut studio album, "channel ORANGE," but also his earlier mixtapes (his self-released "nostalgia ULTRA" was rated one of the best albums of 2011). Come Feb. 10, 2013, Ocean could be among the more decorated musicians at the 55th Ann! ual Gramm! y Awards..

Another for fun., another for Frankie:

Album of the Year Nominees for the 2013 Grammys have been announced, with heavy favorite Mumford & Sons ("Babel") joining Frank Ocean ("channel ORANGE"), The Black Keys ("El Camino"), fun. ("Some Nights") and Jack White ("Blunderbuss").

"Babel" is on the lips of many speculators, particularly because the album strikes the right balance of commercial success and critical appeal. The album moved 600,000 copies in its first week of sales, which was the year's best until Taylor Swift's "Red" debuted with over a million units sold.

And now Maroon 5 is here to take us out.

Some context:

Carly Rae Jepsen did not receive a nomination for Best New Artist during the Grammy Nominations Concert Live! on Wednesday night. Jepsen, who sang the hit Top-40 single "Call Me Maybe" was left off the list of five Best New artist nominees.

In place of Jepsen are Alabama Shakes, fun., Hunter Hayes, The Lumineers and Frank Ocean. As previously reported, Rolling Stone had predicted Ocean, The Lumineers and Hayes as possibilities to grab a nomination, as well as Jepsen.

The 27-year-old Jepsen enjoyed incredible success in 2012 thanks to "Call Me Maybe." As Billboard noted, the song debuted on the Hot 100 in March and hit the top of the chart in June. Per Billboard, ! "Call Me M! aybe" "sold 6.1 million downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, making it the second-biggest-selling digital song of 2012."

Well, Springsteen finally got a mention, but it's not Bruce.

Dierks Bentley - "Home"
Eric Church - "Springsteen"
Ronnie Dunn - "Cost of Livin'"
Hunter Hayes - "Wanted"
Blake Shelton - "Over"

Carrie Underwood - "Blown Away"

What do you think of the concert so far? Heavy on music, light on nominations...

No Carly Rae Jepsen, no Gotye, no Mumford & Sons. Instead, we have Frank Ocean, The Alabama Shakes, fun., Hunter Hayes and The Lumineers. Look out for snubsville complaints from fans of Gotye, Jepsen and One Direction.

@ arjanwrites : Select nominations will be announced during telecast. All nominations (over 100 categories) will be made public at end of show #GRAMMYNoms

The reel starts with footage of Cash at the 1973 Grammy Awards, followed by performances from the Band Perry and Dierks Bentley.

It's like an "SNL" skit, except better. Swift looks quite charming doing something that she seems actually uncomfortable doing, then calls LL "the greatest of all time."

LL reminds the audience that Swift is a six-time Grammy winner.

The Grammy Nominations Concert Live just started, with Taylor Swift and LL Cool J walking out as "We Are N! ever Ever! Getting Back Together" blasts and the Nashville crowd shows its appreciation.

First thing Swift says: "You have no idea how excited I am to have you in my Nashville."

We know, Taylor.

We'll know soon!

@ arjanwrites : I think the Best New Artist category is v exciting. I think Ocean, fun. are a lock but there may be some big surprises #GRAMMYnoms #discuss

Just like with the Oscars, the recognition of a primetime award show means different things to different people. Last year, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver! had this! to say when accepting a Grammy for Best New Artist:

It's really hard to accept this award. There's so much talent out here... and there's a lot of talent that's not here tonight. It's also hard to accept because you know, when I started to make songs I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I'm a little bit uncomfortable up here.

Still, the awards mean a great deal to others. Rihanna had said that her first Grammy, for "Umbrella" in 2008, was the proudest moment of her career. How much they mean to fans and consumers is another question.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Swift's Red would have been the obvious choice, but it missed the cut-off date. Fortunately, Mumford & Sons were more prepared with Babel, which came out on September 24th. "A lock," says Steve Greenberg, former president of Columbia Records and chief executive of S-Curve Records. "Frank Ocean could get a lot of Grammys. H! is album ! [Channel Orange] is wonderful and his story suggests an artistic bravery." Also likely to fit the nominating committee's preferred mixture of high sales, artistic merit and potentially-high-TV-ratings performance: Springsteen's Wrecking Ball, Pink's The Truth About Love and Maroon 5's Overexposed. RECORD/SONG OF THE YEAR: Suspense of the year: Will Psy's "Gangnam Style," the most popular YouTube video of all time and an obvious 2012 pop-culture phenomenon, make the list? Or will it seem like "I'm Too Sexy" by next February? "People at present look him as a one-hit wonder," Greenberg says. "It would be ballsy for the Grammys to do it, but I don't know if it has a chance." It was a huge year for singles, as the record industry continued to drift away from albums, so Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," Maroon 5's "One More Night," Rihanna's "Diamonds," Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and Fun.'s "We Are Young" are likely to compete for real estate in these categories.
